What is shortwave radio and its benefits

Shortwave radio is a radio receiver designed to receive shortwave broadcasts from anywhere in the world.  Typically, it receives wave bands shorter than 1500kHz. Shortwave radio gets its name due to the size of the wavelength. Many countries have shortwave broadcasters ranging from amateur broadcasters to commercial/government owned radio stations.

Shortwave frequenciesfollow the curvature of the earth, which means they are able to bend around the horizon rather than shooting straight into the space.  Due to its short wavelength being able to curve round the earth, it is able to travel over a long distance. Therefore, it is possible to receive radio broadcast from other countries across the continents. Ships and aircrafts, hence, are able to send and receive communications over long distances. Its many uses are amateur, government, military and some commercial radio stations. One very good use for it is in remote part of the world where other forms of communications are either unavailable or not viable. As with AM and FM broadcasts, shortwave’s broadcasts do not have any delay (in other words, live).

Even if there is no delay, the strength of the broadcasts do vary depending on the location, the radio you use and the time of day. The activity of the sun can also have an effect on the signal as well. As a rule of thumb, the best time to tune in to a shortwave radio station from abroad is during night time. However, you may also find good reception during sunset and sunrise.
